July 2027 Slight change re Windows 10 from Microsoft
Microsoft, after saying that under no circumstances would they move the Windows 10 goalposts, have decided to do just that. Perhaps it should come as no surprise given the pressure from the huge number of Windows 10 users out there.
OK So what has changed?
As well as the option to pay $30 to continue with Windows 10 for a year, Microsoft have decided that you can have that year in exchange for 1000 Microsoft Reward points OR for free if you use their OneDrive cloud product.
If you have a Microsoft Account you can see if you have any Reward points by signing in to your Microsoft Account and clicking the Rewards option – you never know! I was surprised to see I had over 2000 of them though I have to be honest and say I have no real idea why – probably mostly from playing Solitaire and Sudoku from time to time.
The OneDrive option effectively means that you have to be signing on to your PC with a Microsoft Account (if you don’t enter a password then you definitely aren’t, though entering one doesn’t mean you are) and have OneDrive actively running which is free for rather small amounts of data.
If you aren’t using OneDrive already, then be careful with this, as, when you set it up, if you don’t answer the questions carefully, you can end up with all your files being loaded onto the cloud and as they only let you have a rather paltry 5GB for free, you could end up being told to pay to extend the storage amount for £2 a month (or £20 a year) to go to 100GB which may still be too little for some of you. Alternatively, you can move some of your stuff back to your PC so it’s not on OneDrive but this can be confusing – isn’t it always?
When the time comes to make any choices, you ought to see a screen with available options over the coming months (maybe weeks) presumably only if you need to do something, and hopefully they will make it fairly clear, but be careful how you answer any OneDrive related questions if you are asked any.
If you need help with this you know where I am. 😊
